Sarah Coventry was started by Charles H. Stuart in 1949.  He named it after his  granddaughter Sarah, and the family hometown of Coventry, England.  They sold jewelry using at-home parties with independent sales representatives, (similar to Avon, Mary Kay and Tupperware).  They did not design their own jewelry but used other manufacturers to produce their jewelry.  Their heydays were during the 1950's - 1970's.  Their jewelry was given away as prizes on popular TV shows like:  The Price is Right, Hollywood Squares, they even had a Sarah Coventry-designed crown for Miss Universe, and the company’s jewelry sets were awarded to Miss America pageant participants.   However, by 1981 the company was facing bankruptcy and was sold to a Chicago firm in 1984.  Sarah Coventry jewelry took back production in 2003, creating modern versions of their vintage designs. Unfortunately, most of the vintage pieces were made of higher quality than the modern copies, they ultimately closed in 2008.  Sarah Coventry became a household word by selling beautiful, inexpensive, costume jewelry direct to the consumer and remained in fashion for more than 60 years.  Today they are recognized as the oldest direct selling jewelry company in the world.
